The Time of My Life

The Time of My Life

In September 2009 movie star Patrick Swayze lost his long and bravely fought battle against pancreatic cancer. His was a life richly led and this memoir, completed just weeks before his death, is a testament to the strength and passion of this remarkable man. It was January 2008 when Patrick Swayze was given the worst news of his life. What he hoped was just a stomach ache was actually stage four pancreatic cancer. This book isn’t just the story of Patrick’s fight against cancer, it’s the story of a remarkable life and career. Intended as a low budget, straight-to-video production, Dirty Dancing became a cult hit and remains one of the most enduring films of the 80s. Ghost cemented Patrick as a hugely bankable star, and most recently Patrick returned to the public’s adoring arms in TV’s The Beast. This book will chronicle Patrick’s personal life, too — including his treatment for alcoholism following the death of his father and sister’s sudden death. What remained a constant in Patrick’s life was his marriage and Patrick and Lisa’s love story is inspiring, honest, heartfelt and transcends the typical celebrity marriage.Lisa and Patrick have shown the world that cancer isn’t just a diagnosis given to one individual, but a disease that can bring a household together or pull a family apart. Bold, honest and inspiring, Patrick Swayze’s memoir is the story of a remarkable man’s life and career and of his refusal to give up without a fight.

Water Wars Pistol and Vest Game

Posted by Notcot on Jul 15, 2012 in Gadgets
Water Wars Pistol and Vest Game

Water fights eh? Remember them? A perfectly fun way to muck about in the summer shooting each other with lovely refreshing water and having a good old laugh about it. WRONG. Forget what you think you know about water fights soldier and get ready for some serious aquatic combat! This Water Pistol Vest set contains two target vests and two water pistols (which are pretty darn powerful it has to be said). The difference is though that scoring a direct hit on these vests actually causes the victim to bleed! Well maybe not actually bleed but some clever thingamajig in the vest material means that water shows up in red on the target which as we all know means that you’ve been got. It takes the idea of a standard water fight to the next level as instead of just mercilessly pummelling each other with water the object is now to avoid being hit yourself. The winner is the one who has managed to lay waste to their opponents without getting a single speck on themselves. With pistols as accurate and far-reaching as these that’s an awful lot harder than it sounds. So turn your summer into an all-out offensive manoeuvre with this great excuse to run around shooting your mates and covering them in fake blood. Wonderful.

A Long Walk to Freedom

A Long Walk to Freedom

Nelson Mandela is one of the great moral and political leaders of our time: an international hero whose lifelong dedication to the fight against racial oppression in South Africa won him the Nobel Peace Prize and the presidency of his country. Since his triumphant release in 1990 from more than a quarter-century of imprisonment Mandela has been at the center of the most compelling and inspiring political drama in the world. As president of the African National Congress and head of South Africa’s antiapartheid movement he was instrumental in moving the nation toward multiracial government and majority rule. He is revered everywhere as a vital force in the fight for human rights and racial equality.”Long Walk to Freedom” is his moving autobiography Here Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela tells the extraordinary story of his life – an epic of struggle setback renewed hope and ultimate triumph which has until now been virtually unknown to most of the world. The foster son of a Thembu chief Mandela was raised in the traditional tribal culture of his ancestors but at an early age learned the modern inescapable reality of what came to be called apartheid one of the most powerful and effective systems of oppression ever conceived. In engrossing prose he tells of his early years as an impoverished student and law clerk in Johannesburg of his slow political awakening and of his pivotal role in the rebirth of a stagnant ANC and the formation of its Youth League in the 1950s. He describes the struggle to reconcile his political activity with his devotion to his family the anguished breakup of his first marriage and the painful separations from his children. He also brings to life the escalating political warfare in the 1950s between the ANC and the government culminating in his dramatic escapades as an underground leader and the notorious Rivonia Trial of 1964 at which he was sentenced to life imprisonment. He recounts the surprisingly eventful 27 years in prison and the complex delicate negotiations that led both to his freedom and to the beginning of the end of apartheid. Finally he provides the inside account of the unforgettable events since his release that produced at last a free multiracial democracy in South Africa.

Fight Club

Posted by Notcot on May 5, 2010 in Cult Film

Average Rating: 4.5 / 5 (222 Reviews)

Amazon.co.uk Review
All films take a certain suspension of disbelief. Fight Club takes perhaps more than others, but if you’re willing to let yourself get caught up in the anarchy, this film, based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk, is a modern-day morality play warning of the decay of society. Edward Norton is the unnamed protagonist, a man going through life on cruise control, feeling nothing. To fill his hours, he begins attending support groups and 12-step meetings. True, he isn’t actually afflicted with the problems, but he finds solace in the groups. This is destroyed, however, when he meets Marla (Helena Bonham Carter), also faking her way through groups. Spiralling back into insomnia, Norton finds his life is changed once again, by a chance encounter with Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), whose forthright style and no-nonsense way of taking what he wants appeal to our narrator. Tyler and the protagonist find a new way to feel release: they fight. They fight each other, and then as others are attracted to their ways, they fight the men who come to join their newly formed Fight Club. Marla begins a destructive affair with Tyler, and things fly out of control, as Fight Club grows into a nationwide fascist group that escapes the protagonist’s control. Fight Club, directed by David Fincher (Seven), is not for the faint of heart; the violence is no holds barred. But the film is captivating and beautifully shot, with some thought-provoking ideas. Pitt and Norton are an unbeatable duo, and the film has some surprisingly humorous moments. The film leaves you with a sense of profound discomfort and a desire to see it again, if for no other reason than to just to take it all in. –Jenny Brown
