All Bottled Up

All Bottled Up

Possibly the best gift for wine lovers ever invented. Whether you’re taking a bottle round to dinner at a friend’s house or giving a good bottle to someone as a present this is probably the most ingenious puzzle solving challenge ever made. Will the lucky recipient be able to free the bottle from the puzzle? Instructions: simply remove the puzzle from the box replace the card bottle with your best bottle of plonk. Then follow the included instruction sheet to correctly place your bottle in the puzzle place it back in the box and hand it to the lucky recipient. At first sight it appears laughably simple to open but first impressions are deceptive. It’s hugely entertaining watching the recipient go from cocky to puzzled to deeply frustrated – especially whilst everyone else is chipping in with their advice… No loop that bit over there slip that toggle round the whatsit etc. The recipient will feel they deserve every last drop if they do finally manage to crack it. If they don’t aside from you crowing you can put them out of their misery as it does come with release instructions. All Bottled Up is an ingenious gift idea for that ‘perfect host’ and fits standard wine herb vinegar and olive oil bottles (for non-booze drinkers). It’s a great party piece and can be used again and again unless someone gets so frustrated they bring out the power tools. (Does not include bottle!) Features: ‘All Bottled Up’ puzzle Works with standard wine herb vinegar olive oil and pop bottles Includes wooden puzzle pieces linking cord and instructions Does not include wine! Includes instructions Please Note: Colours may vary. Size: Assorted puzzle pieces: largest 14.5 x 10 x 10cm smallest 3 x 2 x 2cm

AstroEye Planetarium

Posted by Notcot on Dec 13, 2012 in Gadgets
AstroEye Planetarium

If Patrick Moore has taught us anything (aside from his work on Gamesmaster… terrible business) it’s that the night sky is a tremendously beautiful thing. However thanks to the omnipresent orange fug that covers our major cities seeing it clearly is a bit of a struggle for those of us who don’t live in the countryside. Thankfully the AstroEye Planetarium projector is on hand to show us not only the wonders of the night sky but of whole constellations and star systems. It’s sort of like being in 2001: A Space Odyssey but without the psychotic computer and ballet music. Simply pop this attractive spherical projector unit into its bowl-shaped holder angle it up at the ceiling and turn it on. Immediately you’ll be awe-struck as over 8 000 stars gently revolve around the room. There are two slide discs for you to play with one with all the constellations marked on it and one without if you fancy a more natural experience. With a five-speed control you can control the speed of the rotation too. It’s even date-sensitive meaning that you can see the subtle movements of the stars from day to day. Best of all a press of a button will send a shooting star flying across your universe (though hopefully it won’t be replicated in reality – there’ll be meteors flying all over the place). It obviously works best at night or in a darkened room (we tried it out under a desk with mixed results) and is therefore brilliant as an alternative to a night-light or lamp or makes lovely mood lighting. With a sleep function that allows you to doze off without having to worry about turning it off. Perfect for anyone wanting to learn about astrology or those who want some interesting mood lighting the AstroEye Planetarium crams the whole universe into your bedroom.

The Steampunk Bible: An Illustrated Guide to the World of Imaginary Airships, Corsets and Goggles, Mad Scientists, and Strange Literature

Posted by Notcot on Dec 2, 2012 in Steampunk
The Steampunk Bible: An Illustrated Guide to the World of Imaginary Airships, Corsets and Goggles, Mad Scientists, and Strange Literature

Over the past fifteen years, Steampunk – a mash-up of Victorian and sci-fi aesthetics with a splash of punk rock attitude – has gone from being a literary movement to a part of pop culture and a way of life. This subculture celebrates the inventor as an artist and hero, re-envisioning and crafting retro technologies including antiquated airships and steam-powered robots. The Steampunk aesthetic now permeates movies, comics, fashion, art and more, and has given a distinct flavor to iconic events such as Maker Faire and the Burning Man festival. The Steampunk Bible is the first book of its kind, a fully illustrated compendium tracing the roots and history of this subculture, from the work of its godfathers Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, to the key figures who coined the word that would spawn a literary genre, to the vast community of craftsmen and artists who translated that spark into a lifestyle with clothing and accessories such as goggles, corsets, pocket watches, and with an attitude to match. This ultimate resource, filled with scores of illustrations and photographs, will appeal to aficionados and novices alike as author Jeff VanderMeer takes the reader on a wild ride through the clockwork corridors of Steampunk past, present and future.
