The Communist Manifesto (1848) Marx and Engels’s revolutionary summons to the working classes is one of the most important and influential political theories ever formulated. After four years of collaboration the authors produced this incisive account of their idea of Communism in which they envisage a society without classes private property or a state. They argue that increasing exploitation of industrial workers will eventually lead to a revolution in which Capitalism is overthrown. This vision provided the theoretical basis of political systems in Russia China Cuba and Eastern Europe affecting the lives of millions. The Communist Manifesto still remains a landmark text: a work that continues to influence and provoke debate on capitalism and class.

Sometimes funny always creepy genuinely moving this marvellous spine-chiller will appeal to readers from nine to ninety. – “Books for Keeps”. “I was looking forward to “Coraline” and I wasn’t disappointed. In fact I was enthralled. This is a marvellously strange and scary book.” – Philip Pullman “Guardian”. “If any writer can get the guys to read about the girls it should be Neil Gaiman. His new novel “Coraline” is a dreamlike adventure. For all its gripping nightmare imagery this is actually a conventional fairy story with a moral.” – “Daily Telegraph”. Stephen King once called Neil Gaiman ‘a treasure-house of stories’ and in this wonderful novel which has been likened to both “Alice in Wonderland” and the “Narnia Chronicles” we get to see Neil at his storytelling best.

This unclassifiable but stunningly original film obliterates the walls between teen comedy, science fiction, family drama, horror, and cultural satire–and remains wildly entertaining throughout. Jake Gyllenhaal (October Sky) stars as Donnie, a borderline-schizophrenic adolescent for whom there is no difference between the signs and wonders of reality (a plane crash that decimates his house) and hallucination (a man-sized, reptilian rabbit who talks to him). Obsessed with the science of time travel and acutely aware of the world around him, Donnie is isolated by his powers of analysis and the apocalyptic visions that no one else seems to share. The debut feature of writer-director Richard Kelly, Donnie Darko is a shattering, hypnotic work that sets its own terms and gambles–rightfully so, as it turns out–that a viewer will stay aboard for the full ride. –Tom Keogh

Sometimes a movie achieves such legendary status that it can’t quite live up to its reputation. Plan 9 from Outer Space is not one of these movies. It is just as magnificently terrible as you’ve heard. Plan 9 is the story of space aliens who try to conquer the Earth through resurrection of the dead. Psychic Criswell narrates (“Future events such as these will affect you in the future!”) as police rush through the cemetery, occasionally clipping the cardboard tombstones in their zeal to find the source of the mysterious goings-on. More than just a bad film, Plan 9 is something of a one- stop clearinghouse for poor cinematic techniques: The time shifts whimsically from midnight to afternoon sun, Tor Johnson flails desperately in an attempt to rise from his coffin, and flying saucers zoom past on clearly visible strings. Fading star Bela Lugosi tragically died during filming, but such a small hurdle could not stop writer-producer-director Ed Wood. Lugosi is ingeniously replaced with a man who holds a cape across his face and might as well have “NOT BELA LUGOSI” stamped on his forehead. Plan 9 is so sweetly well- intentioned in both its message and its execution that it’s impossible not to love it. And if you don’t, well, as Eros says, “You people of Earth are idiots!” –Ali Davis
