Anyone Can Do it

Posted by Notcot on Jul 11, 2012 in Cult Film
Anyone Can Do it

At 30 Duncan Bannatyne had no money and was enjoying life on the beaches of Jersey. He saw a story of someone who had made himself a millionaire and decided to do the same. Five years later he had done it and now he is worth 168 million. In this remarkable book Bannatyne relives his colourful path to riches from ice cream salesman to multi-millionaire explaining how anyone could take the same route as he did – if they really want to. Hugely articulate and with numerous fascinating and revealing stories to tell this is an autobiography and a business book unlike any other – but then Bannatyne isn’t like any other businessman either.

Waterbuoy

Posted by Notcot on Jun 17, 2012 in Gadgets
Waterbuoy

There is nothing absolutely nothing half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Until you drop your keys overboard then it all becomes a bit of a chore. Next time attach the Waterbuoy and within seconds of hitting the water environmentally friendly gas will automatically inflate the reinforced rubber balloon to save your keys from being lost in the gloomy depths. You don’t have to stop at keys either – clip the Waterbuoy to any item weighing up to 1kg and it will happily float on the water for 24 hours. If you’re going to drop something in the river chances are you’ll do it in the dark (it’s the law of the sod – or something like that) which is why the crafty inventors have included a blinking LED light in just the right place to make your floating gizmo visible from up to 250m away. This makes the Waterbuoy the world’s first and only miniature floatation device that’s visible at night. So if you simply love messing about on the river or fancy a life on the ocean waves make sure you keep plenty of these handy gadgets onboard (they’re one use only – but hopefully you’ll have learnt your lesson the first few times you drop your keys overboard). The next time your keys go overboard you won’t have to waste money on a submarine if you’ve remembered to attach the Waterbuoy.

Out of The Past Aka Build My Gallows High [DVD]

Posted by Notcot on Jun 10, 2011 in Noir

Curious tale of a private eye who is hired by a villain to find his homicidal girlfriend. But the story takes a twist when he tracks her down and promptly falls in love with her.”Build my gallows high, baby”–just one of the quintessentially noir sentiments expressed by Robert Mitchum in this classic of the genre. Mitchum, in absolute prime, sleepy-eyed form, relates a complicated flashback about getting hired by gangster Kirk Douglas to find femme fatale Jane Greer. The chain of film noir elements–love, money, lies–drags Mitchum into the lower depths. Director Jacques Tourneur gets the edgy negotiations between men and women as exactly right as he gets the inky shadows of the noir landscape (even the sunlit exteriors are fraught with doubt). This is Mitchum in excelsis, with his usual laid-back cool laced with great dialogue and tragic foreshadowing. As for his co-star, James Agee immortally opined that Jane Greer “can best be described, in an ancient idiom, as a hot number.” Remade in 1984, unhappily, as Against All Odds (with Greer in a supporting role). –Robert Horton
