This is the cable you need if you want to display video / photos / Youtube clips from an iPod touch on a tv. At the moment, there is no alternative but to use Apple’s own cable and pay their rather exorbitant price for it. I think Amazon have the best price for it right now, as the usual RRP is £35.

Anyway, once I bit the bullet and shelled out for this cable I was very pleasantly surprised with what I got. The cable feels quite robust and of good quality. The quality of the output to tv is excellent as well. Of course it all depends on how good the source video/photo is but generally the results are very good. The one thing it doesn’t do is output the internet display to tv (other than when it’s Youtube clips or similar streaming videos). While you’re watching video you can also have the iPod plugged in and charging so there’s no worries of running out of battery power mid-way through a film.

Included with the cable is an adapter for American power points too. This cable will output audio if you want to listen to music through tv speakers (or a stereo if you prefer). This cable definitely allows me to make greater use of my iPod touch and to that note I’d definitely recommend it.

I had a Belkin AV cable for my 5th generation iPod, which I broke in a shelf over the toilet and headphone tangling incident, so I had to get a new cable when I replaced the iPod with a classic. This looks expensive for what you get, but you also get a charger, with UK and European socket adaptors, which is brilliant if you travel and in my mind makes it worth the cost.

I would recomend this if you spend a lot of time in hotels, you an connect it and watch videos from you iPod and also use the TV as a set of speakers. Plus the charger is tiny and light which also helps.

I made the mistake of buying a cheapy composite cable before I bought the official Apple cable. The cheap cable worked ok but when my friend lent me his Apple cable, the difference in both visual and audio quality was amazing. Therefore, if you want excellent audio and video, it’s worth spending the money. If you’re not bothered, get a cheap one.

I bought this from a seller on the Amazon Marketplace. The item was cheaper than buying direct from Amazon but the packaging was described as “tatty”. Although I was told that the item would not arrive in time for Christmas as I had left it too late to order (as usual!), it arrived within 24 hours of being ordered, just in time for Christmas and the packaging was acceptable and not as “tatty” as expected.

As for the item itself, well it does exactly what it says it will… I hooked it up to my new Sony Bravia HD TV within seconds and within a couple of minutes was watching the videos I had stored on my iPod. The image quality is acceptable if a little fuzzy and undefined, but you were never going to get fantastic quality. The inclusion of a USB charger is a bonus (considering you’ll pay £20 for one on it’s own) although as I have already got one, it’s a bit of a waste and I’d rather if Apple would just have sold me the AV cable for around £10. The cable does feel well made however and designed to be used on the go.

I’d recommend this cable to anyone who wants to watch videos from their iPods but find the screens on the iPods too small for extended viewing.
