Bioshock (Mac DVD)

BioShock is a revolution in the shooter genre that will forever change the expectations for the FPS. Going beyond “run and gun corridors,” “monster-closet AIs” and static worlds, BioShock creates a living, unique and unpredictable FPS experience. BioShock is the Shooter 2.0.

After your plane crashes into icy uncharted waters, you discover a rusted bathysphere and descend into Rapture, a city hidden beneath the sea. Constructed as an idealistic society for a hand picked group of scientists, artists and industrialists, the idealism is no more. Now the city is littered with corpses, wildly powerful guardians roam the corridors as little girls loot the dead, and genetically mutated citizens ambush you at every turn.

  • Take control of your world by hacking mechanical devices, commandeering security turrets and crafting unique items critical to your very survival.
  • Upgrade your weapons with ionic gels, explosives and toxins to customize them to the enemy and environment.
  • Genetically modify your body through dozens of Plasmid Stations scattered throughout the city, empowering you with fantastic and often grotesque abilities.
  • Explore a living world powered by Ecological A.I., where the inhabitants have interesting and consequential relationships with one another that impact your gameplay experience.
  • Experience truly next generation graphics that vividly illustrate the forlorn art deco city, highlighted by the most detailed and realistic water effects ever developed in a video game.
  • Make meaningful choices and mature decisions, ultimately culminating in the grand question: do you exploit the innocent survivors of Rapture… or save them?

The best FPS game ever for the Mac. Previous experiences on the Mac include Doom, Quake and Prey. All of these are great but nothing beats Biochock in terms of background story, activities and of course the magnificent surroundings. There is so much you can do and so many different ways to do them that you can play it time and time again without getting bored.
I have an iMac with dualcore at 3.06 MHz with 4GB memory and at times I had to switch to lower graphics specs to avoid slowing down. The richness of the graphics, especially when a lot of water and smoke are present, does overwhelm the machine occasionally. But even on the lower setting the graphics is still exceptional.

This game is quite simply brilliant. I agree with the other reviewer about the slightly pricey tags that come with most mac games and its nice that a few quality titles are now appearing. I still love playing computer games but in this hectic day and age have a lot less time to play them now. When I do get round to playing a game these days I usually try and find something special and this game is certainly that. The atmospheric and epic film like quality is mind blowing. I was gonna wait until I bought a ps3 and buy it for that console but having bought a new mac I thought it would be silly not to try out a game as good as this and put my graphics card to the test. I’m used to playing games with console controllers but the keyboard and mouse work very well with this title. I’m only half an hour in at this stage but the storyline looks excellent and found it generally terrifying in places. There’s loads of great detail everywhere and you may find yourself spending 5 minutes just looking at your surroundings. I’ve whacked up all the settings on highest and occasionally it has a mild glitch or will freeze for a few seconds but doesn’t really disrupt game play that much. The weapons are intriguing and obviously are going to get more interesting as the game progresses. So so far very very good and would recommend to everyone. I think the way the game uses different styles of gaming makes it work so well by which I mean there are elements of a first person shooter mixed with horror and role playing. What more can one say.

I thoroughly agree with the others about the quality of this game. I have an iMac 2.8 Ghz with 2gb RAM. I don’t appear to have the graphics issues that others here have mentioned however I do have one small gripe with this game. Gamepad support. If you prefer the gamepad over the keyboard/mouse approach then you may be in for a (albeit small) disappointment.

There is an option to use a gamepad but it is for an Xbox 360 controller only and doesn’t work with any other device. I also own a PS3. The PS3 gamepad doesn’t work of course, neither does my LogicTech Dual Shock gamepad that I bought especially for my iMac. The PS3 gamepad is now supposed to work (via USB) following a recent update to MacOX, but I still can’t get it to work properly. Oddly enough I’ve seen reports elsewhere that even the Xbox 360 controller doesn’t always work too well either. By way of comparison, Tomb Raider Anniverary (also Feral) works well with the LogiTech Dual Shock.

That said, they (Feral I think) have promised an update for the Logitech Dual Shock immininently. But that was months ago and the auto-update feature still finds no update.

Overall a very good game but if, like me, you have carpal tunnel syndrome or simply prefer using a gamepad, I would check with the publisher first if I were you. I suspect Bioshock 2 probably will fare better in this respect.
