I ordered the Canon IXUS 130 to take on holiday to Las Vegas in March 2010. The main features that i was attracted to included:

- Compact Size

- 4x Optical Zoom

- Canon brand (positive experience with other Canon cameras)

- 2.7″ Screen

My purchase did not disappoint!

The camera looks stunning; clean lines, robust design and sheer compact-ness (if that’s even a word!). The ergonomics are also great; the buttons are exactly where you would want them to be and the software interface is very intuitive.

For point-and-shoot usage the IXUS 130 leaves little to be desired; the images produced are generally very clear and bright. There are also some cool features in the scene mode that produce some fun images: Fish-eye effect (pretty self explanatory), smart shutter (which detects and captures when someone smiles) miniature effect (which makes big structures look like they are made of lego!).

Video capture is also impressive. You can shoot at resolutions up to 720p which I believe is technically HD. The sound capture associated with shooting video is far better than I had with my previous Casio Exilim camera.

Initial disappointment was confirmed after I took a set of comparison photos with both the Ixus130 and my old Ixus40. EVERY still photo was better with the 40: normal, close up, macro, face, garden etc.

The 130 is simply not sharp enough, even without zooming in, it’s just obvious.

I used Auto mode for all, because this is a compact point-and-shoot camera.

The moving images on the Ixus130 were excellent quality, far better than the 40, BUT…

* they’re widescreen ratio (might be settable, didn’t find out) which doesn’t edit well in MS Windows Movie Maker (an excellent free tool for building movies on Windows) and gives problems when transferred to DVD;

* they’re in .MOV, MPEG4 format – again MS WMM can’t handle, and the clips can only be played in QT, RealPlayer, or MediaPlayeClassic, not Windows Media Player.

If you’ve not had an Ixus before you might think it’s fine.

Check reviews before buying.

Mine’s been returned for a refund, I’ll stick with my trusty Ixus40.

After reading all the reviews and looking on’Which’ to see what they said was the best compact digital camera I bought the Canon Ixus 130. Within 2 weeks the shutter locked. canon didnt want to know about supplying a new one so I had to send it away to their nominated repairer at MY cost and waited 2 weeks to get it back. Pictures are OK but would not recommend this as a good choice!
