This review is from: Film Noir Thrillers [DVD] [1945] (DVD)

This 3-disc set is a bit of a bargain, including as it does both ‘Detour’ and ‘D.O.A.’, two wonderful gems of the genre. The print quality of ‘Detour’ leaves a little to be desired, being scratched and a bit jumpy in places, but given the age of the film, and the fact that no-one anticipated how timeless it’s appeal would prove, it’s only to be expected. ‘Detour’ is a Road-Noir with a genuinely nightmarish quality. The very apparent back projection lends a surreal edge to the driving sequences, which serve to place the implausible plot twists in a context that makes them seem possible. A classic, 5/5. ‘D.O.A.’ is nearly as good, with a wonderful opening scene of a man stumbling into a police station to report his own murder – there follows the story in flashback of how he tries to find out who killed him. 4/5. And then there’s ‘The Fast & The Furious’ – not really a Noir, but a mildly entertaining road movie (more of a man-on-the-run/hot-rod exploitation picture) from producer Roger Corman. 2/5. Go buy, and enjoy.
