Blimey, this naughty nunsploitation film from the early 1970s makes Ken Russell’s “The Devils” look like “The Sound Of Music”! Set in 15th century Italy, the amazing Florinda Bolkan plays the title character who is sent to a convent by her father and then all Hell follows. She eventually escapes from the convent and joins an army of Muslim invaders and it then becomes payback time for all those who wronged her….

This movie is definitely not for the prudish or the squeamish. I’m sure that fans of European exploitation cinema will relish the scenes of rape, torture and castration but other viewers may find this film extremely heavy-going and uncomfortable to watch.

Hammer horror fans may wish to know that the film also stars Anthony Higgins (a.k.a. Anthony Corlan), the Northampton-born actor who appeared in “Taste The Blood Of Dracula” and “Vampire Circus”, but “Flavia The Heretic” is a world apart from the Hammer movies in terms of its shocking content.

This DVD from Shameless Films presents the film in a 16 x 9 anamorphic ratio (for those of you who understand all that technical stuff) and the print is uncut so every sinful scene has been preserved in all its glory. If you dare, I suggest that you watch “Flavia” along with “Killer Nun” for a double helping of guilty pleasures and then pray for forgiveness afterwards.

the best nunsploitation film, 26 Sep 2008
This review is from: Flavia The Heretic [1974] [DVD] (DVD)

Flavia the Heretic is probbaly the best example of the nunslpoitation genre it is well made the acting is top notch (especially by Florinda Bolkan) and has some grusome scenes of torture and some surreal imagery like a woman climbming in and out of a cows carcass. This is a highly reccomended film for fans of euro horror.

Shameless dvd is presented letterboxed (1.85:1) sadly not 16:9 enhanced like the package claims. The picture is very good however and the film is uncut for the first time ever in the UK. The only extra is a bunch of trailers. Highly reccomended.

Good Italian film, some sex & violence, pretty good acting.
I believe it’s historically true, but not sure.
Ending quite gory.
