This works as expected, except for two gripes.

Firstly, the vocabulary is pretty basic. It boasts of 400,000 translations, but, the vocab for each language is limited to stuff you might use on holiday. Any concept which is of non-immediate practical use is not likely to be in the dictionary as I’ve found. Therefore this cannot replace a proper dictionary.

Another annoying omission is that, for german, it doesn’t tell you the gender of nouns so can’t help with grammar. This is a big omission as anyone learning german will know, you need to know whether nouns are der, die or das.

other than that, it’s ok for a basic tool to compliment a proper dictionary, or replace it just for simple every-day situations.

I ordered the Franklin TG-450 12 Language Translator almost by mistake as it was not entirely what I wanted. When it arrived, well packaged, I could see that the keyboard was too small and the lid was rather flimsy. The hinges that held the lid would not (in my opinion) stand up to constant use, and could easily break, leaving the keypad exposed. I did not use the item as I returned it, and bought the next model up (the Franklin TG-470 12 Lang Trans) which was larger, sturdier and with a large screen on the upper lid. This screen allows for lists and phrases to be displayed without scrolling in all directions. Better quality and value for a few extra quid.

Nice layout and easy to carry around, the lid hinges are a bit flimsy but otherwise OK.

Although I have not had it long, I thought it would translate more complicated phrases, but these are limited to the usual travel words and phrases. I bought it to help me translate a lot of French documents to English, but am stuck if I ask it to translate eg. “Did your great grandfather fight in the first world war?”, but OK for “Where is the Chemist shop?”, so for those using it for holidays – well its quite good if you ask for the usual things.

It was good at translating a few Italian words whilst on holiday in Sicily, but we couldn’t find many of the ones we were looking for.

Just back from Italy and used this quite a bit. For the money I thought this was a great buy. Smaller and lighter than a dictionary/phrase book (plus there are another 11 languages in there!). As a phrase book it is a bit limited but nothing like as limited as my knowledge of the included languages, so all in all, good value for money and very handy.
