When Hp sell you a new printer they only give you starter cartridges with it which hold a very small amount of ink in them Hp 350 black and the Hp 351 colour cartridges. I was using about 3 black and 2 colours cartridge per month and it was costing me a small forturne. I later found out that Hp do a higher yield versions of the 350 and 351 cartridges which cost only a few pounds more but hold far more ink in them than the starter cartridges which I was using before. What you need is a HP 350XL on the black which hold 20mls of ink rather than the 4.5mls of ink that is in the 350 starter cartridge and on the colour what you should be using is a HP 351XL which holds 13mls rather than the 3.5mls which is in the 351 colour starter cartridge. I can even go one better, I now use a company called advantage online who stock the Hp originals plus do a british premium compatible 350XL and 351XL cartridges which hold 20mls black and 13mls colour. I have used them a couple of times so far and have been quite inpressed plus you get free delivery. I hope you don’t fall into the Hp trap of selling a very good printer (Officejet J5740) at a very cheap price and then trying to charge you load of money for starter cartridges which are nearly empty.

This item is a common one that is easily found in most appropriate

retail outlets. But buying via Amazon does give a pretty wide range of prices to choose from numerous suppliers whereas in a single shop there would in all liklihood only be one price. Printers usually give ample advance warning for a cartridge replacement so ordering via the web is no problem and in my experience the item is delivered, quite often, overnight or usually within a day or so. I have bought a wide variety of items through Amazon over a good many years and have never had any serious problems. Personally I always go for ‘original’ cartridge inks rather than compatibles. For a marginal price difference one can have the real thing! Finally,I must say that one certain preference that I have is to avoid the ‘fill your own’ kits. The better ones may be acceptable but the really cheapoes stand a good chance of fouling up your printer…let alone your fingers and clothes!

Having tried various refills and substitute ink cartridges, I’ve found that the best value is to buy the original “real thing”. Excellent service, with immediate delivery. JFL
