Bought from Amazon, good price and fast delivery as usual. Decided to go for the HDMI as my TV has been HD ready for 4 years but never seen any HD, so thought I’d give it a try. Player is sturdy and stylish enough with plenty of features for the adventurous and was easy to setup once I’d read the manual. Picture does look sharper (you’ll need an HDMI lead) and Philips is usually a decent brand, so overall happy with my purchase. Only slight gripe comes when I tried to register the product with Philips, which seemed like a good idea with the advances in HD technology but it looks like a bit of a scam as once you’ve input your contact details, the rest of the links don’t work!

Have large DVD (multiregion) collection & video files to play. Bought this to be able do it all.

Easy to ‘hack’ to multiregion – no need to pay extra – took me less than 30 seconds – see any of the main websites for codes & use the same Philips code as other recent hacks e.g. DVP3560. I understand that this is not illegal but an agreement between hollywood & the DVD manufacturers.

This plays not only any DVD I’ve thrown at it but also all the video files from my computer – transfer to a memory stick, plug into the front USB socket & it plays them all so far without any problems.

I cannot comment on backwards TV compatibility (see other comments) as I’m still using my old CRT TV via a scart lead but picture is v good.

Can’t rate this player highly enough – cheap, plays anything & now multiregion!

Having used the DVP3580/05 for a few weeks now i can honestly say…IMPRESSIVE! In operation the unit is easy to set up and feels quality too with up to date looks, the remote control is small and nicely laid out. It plays everything i have thrown at it so far..avi video or Divx as the format is known,mp3’s sound great, jpeg pictures look stunning as do DVD’s. I have always liked Philips as i still have 2 older players that i purchased 5 or 6 years ago and they still work like new so from past experience..the players are durable. Using the DVP3580/05 in HD is simply stunning, the upscaling of older DVD’s works a treat and there is a noticable difference in image quality etc. Sharp images and excellent colour reproduction and great sound. The unit seems nice and quiet in operation too. On to the USB port situated at the front of the unit…I have used different size memory sticks and all worked perfectly playin avi/divx video, pictures and mp3’s. I experimented with external hard drives, I connected a Maxtor 80gb 1st..the unit recognised it instantly, the unit even recognised that the hard drive was split in two(partitioned),i simply pressed the usb key on the remote along with no2 key on remote to access the 2nd partition. Amazing! Philips say that the unit will not recognise partitions. Well mine does :-). I now have a Maxtor 320gb hard drive permanently connected via the usb port. I made the external hard drive using a powered external hard drive enclosure and a spare hard drive. I would recommend using a powered hard drive rather than non powered i.e use a hard drive that has its own external power supply. Also ensure the hard drive or usb sticks are formatted in fat32.All in all the DVP3580/05 has done everything i asked of it and more. Nice to see technology that actually works and lives up to its advertised specification. There is a firmware update for the unit on the phlips website and it is easy to install via the usb port on the player. Full instructions also on the philips website. All in all a great dvd player for the money. If you buy this dvd player and your tv is HD then dont forget to buy a hdmi cable. Decent cables can be found here on Amazon cheaply enough. As for the comment on a review about the player not working with his Sony tv…My neighbour has a Sony LCD HD 20S300 and the philips works perfectly so maybe the reviewer has an isolated issue with his Sony tv. I have hooked this DVD player up to an LG LCD HD tv and a Panasonic tv and it worked flawlessly. Recommended! Note: To turn the philips dvp3580 dvd player into a multi region player to get this do the following 1.turn on player and open disc tray (with no disc in it) 2.press the “set up” button on the remote 3.use the up and down key’s on the remote and select “preferences from the menu

4.while in this menu press the following keys on the remote 1,3,8,9,3 and then you should the word

“region” and the number 2.use the up and down keys on the remote and select “0” and press enter. 5.

press the “set up” button again to exit then the process is complete. Please note this might work for

other various models from philips, the model DVP3520..just change the above code to 138931 Hope this helps :-)

I bought this player as a replacement for a similar older model Philips DVD/DivX USB player model DVP 5980 – the major difference is the replacement of the USB1 with USB2 . I have been using this player for approx 1 month. While playing DVDs there is a noticeable noise from the disc drive (shame) As you would expect while playing from the USB there is no noise.

All DVDs and DVDRs I have tried will play, although playback is sometimes jerky. I like to watch US imports and find that the player unfortunately has to be set to either PAL or NTSC as the `multi’ setting results in jerky playback.

The USB2 port (is so much better than USB1) plays almost all DivX files I have tried and is very useful. I have a deaf family member and trying to get subtitles to play correctly through the USB is very hit and miss, all `idx/sub’ files seem to play out of sync, `srt’ does a much better job but not perfect.

Overall seems to be less impressive than my older player apart from the addition of USB2 which is very welcome. The motor noise while playing DVDs is very annoying and I will be looking for a new player very soon.
