I’m always surprised how few the options are, for those who want good wireless headsets. The few that one can find in the market tend to be expensive. In the absence of much first hand experience, I decided to buy the cheapest available one i.e. the plantronics and I must say that I’m very pleased so far. The earcups are well fitting and comfortable. In fact from my basic research i think they are more wider and thus more comfortable than the parallel logitech clearchat/creative hs-1200.

Though the headset could have used rechargeable AAA batteries or a cradle-like charging unit, the current USB based charging mechanism is reasonably fast and it will probably prove more compact and useful. Despite being the cheapest wireless headset in the market, I think the audio quality is very good too. Also it has reasonably good reach and works fine all around the house.

Previously I was using the Sennheiser HD 555 wired headphones in combination with the Andrea NC 91 wired microphone, and was looking to combine two devices into one and have a wireless headset (having tripped over the cables on several occasions). I had also been interested in the purchase of active noise cancelling headphones. Researching the market there did not seem to be a single device that offered these three in combination. So therefore I looked to purchase a good quality wireless headset with a noise cancelling microphone. I settled on the Plantronics 995 headset based on the website reviews, but was still somewhat concerned that the headset, in the ~£50 price bracket, was not going to be of audiophile quality. I can report that while the audio quality of this headset is slightly below that of my previous Sennheiser headphones, the audio quality is still good. There is a decent amount of bass and spoken audio is very clear. Additionally, the noise cancelling microphone works well with Dragon NaturallySpeaking, which I’m using to dictate this review. In that regard the microphone is slightly better than the Andrea one I was using before, and overall is of good quality, giving very good accuracy results.

The range on this device I would describe as “within the room” rather than “within the house”, but if you’re looking for a headset to use from the sofa rather than the garden, then this will be just fine for you.

Installation is simple — both Windows and LINUX recognise the USB dongle as a plug and play audio device. Windows will set this as the default audio device which will be picked up by any newly opened applications automatically. Operation with Skype, media players and Dragon NaturallySpeaking is 100% fine.

The life of the built-in rechargeable battery is several hours, so it is probably just fine for nearly a full working day of use. A good feature in my opinion is that the charging mechanism is via a USB cable (I believe it is a micro USB adapter), so there is no need for yet another proprietary charger. A full charge takes in the region of 1 to 2 hours.

When within range the audio quality is at virtually 100% with only very infrequent and slight dropouts. The volume changing and play pause buttons on the side of the headset also worked fine with Windows and LINUX, without the need for any additional software or configuration.

The only slight feature that I don’t like is the mechanism by which the headset is turned on and off — rather than having a discreet slider there is a single button which you are required to press and hold for a couple of seconds to turn the headset on and off. This prevents accidental pressing of the button I suppose, but I find that two seconds a little tedious. An LED on the side of the headset indicates the current status — flashing blue if not connected to the USB dongle, steady blue if on and red when charging/battery empty. There is also a relatively subtle buzzer sound when the device is either low on battery or is not yet connected to the dongle.

Comfort is also good — I’m able to use the headset for a couple of hours straight without problems.

Overall the Plantronics .audio 995 is a good quality device, suited for use in all computer applications (dictation, music, movies and Skype). At around £50 it is very good value. I would think that only the most stringent audiophiles would complain slightly about the audio quality. Recommended.

I’ll start with my only two slight niggles – one is that as I bought this to use mainly with skype there is no way to answer a skype call on the headset itself. A pity this as I have two bluetooth headsets and both of them have this answer feature. This brings me to another issue i.e. the fact that this is NOT a bluetooth device is both an advantage and disadvantage depending on what you might be expecting to use it for. The advantage side is that it’s range seems significantly greater than both of my bluetooth devices and I have been able to have clear uninterrupted conversations with the headset at least 50ft away from my desktop computer(where the dongle is). The downside is because it is not bluetooth it wont work with my bluetooth enabled mobile phone (not a problem for me because I already have bluetooth headsets for them anyway) not that the headset is exactly discreet for walking around the streets with anyway but I thought it worth mentioning.

Other reviewers have commented on the audio quality and I can confirm that it is surprisingly good for a wireless device – in fact I spoke to my nephew on skype only this morning and he is currently working and living in Manilla in the Philippines yet he could hear me loud and clear as if I was almost in the same room with him – when I told him I was using a WIRELESS headset he promptly ordered TWO of them right away (one for him and one for his dad’s birthday). It is not the most compact nor discreet headset out there by a long chalk but for those who want or need to use their headsets for long periods of time it is certainly one of the most comfortable headsets I have used. Just wish they could have solved that skype answering issue otherwise considering the high quality and relative low price I would say this headset is just about perfect!

Well, the delivery of the item took more time than expected.

But overall a good product.

Pros:

1) It’s wireless (ofcourse that’s why I bought it in the frst place)

2) The build quality is solid, very comfortable to wear for hours

3) Truly plug and play on windows, got detected immediately, no hassles at all, haven’t tried on mac yet

4) Voice Clarity is good and the mic is superb, enhances your voice over the background noise

5) Works on Skype/Yahoo/MSN and My Cisco Softphone as well, that was a bonus

Cons

1) Sometimes I hear a humming sound when some sms is coming through on my mobile. Not sure if its because of that

2) I wish it worked with my mobile phone

3) It works only with the bluetooth dongle that came along with it. I tried with the plantronics voyager bluetooth dongle but won’t get detected. So it you loose it it’s useless.

4) Could not see any opening for batteries, so I guess if the rechargable batteries dies, we are done with it.

Every now and then you buy something on the internet that truly amazes you and is excellent value for money. This headset is it! I did a lot of research before venturing into the world of wireless headsets and I saw loads of headphones that I might have instinctively bought based on brand names like Skype and Logitech. This headset was the cheapest I found and certainly delivered. The ear pieces are huge and extremely comfortable. The sound quality is phenomenal in my humble opinion. I walked away from my computer, went into my back garden, shut my kitchen door while participating in a tele-conference with people from as far as USA/Canada/Jamaica and this thing did not skip a beat. The sound was incredibly clear, I asked people how they were picking me up and they said it was like I was in front of them. Setting it up is as easy as 1-2-3, anyone can do it, very plain and simple instructions are given. I love the padding across the cradle that goes over your head. This is just one great product that does the job it was intended for exceptionally well.
