Shades of noir contains 10 essays, each one explore film noir from another aspect. It begins with a look at the history of noir and moves to interesting territories. The writers explore women and noir, black cinema and noir and other subjects (political ans social). The most interesting essays are the ones that deal with the genre in the 80’s cinema- blade runner, angel heart, blue velvet and even terminator 2 !! It is important to have access to older movies because it’s really more interesting to see the movies that you read about (there is a whole essay on “the blue gardenia” directed by Fritz Lang in 52-3 which is one of the best essays in the book but not that effective if you can’t see it). I recommend this book for everyone who loves film noir and want to study it through various aspects. It’s not light reading but it’s worth it.
