Pricey and Poor Signal Strength, 24 July 2010

I bought one of these for my Sony Bravia EX703. I echo the thoughts of others about this being a bit overpriced, but if you want to connect the TV directly to the internet you’ll have to accept it.

I find it does not pick up the signal very well if the router is not in the same room as the TV. I normally keep the router in my study, and I can access the internet on a PC or PS3 from any room in the house, and in some parts of the garden. However, I can’t connect to the internet on my Bravia if the router is not in the same room. SO I’ve had to move the router into the living room. I can still access the internet in any room in the house on my other equipment, so I don’t understand why this dongle is so weak.

Most of the stuff available on the Bravia is of no interest to me, I just hope they get Freeview on it soon. I was quite surprised to see my music collection from my PC appearing on the TV after I fitted the dongle. Although this isn’t necessary for me as I have a PC connected to my AV receiver and can play my PC music through the amp in any case.

So overall, the item works, albeit with limited strength, it’s pricey and you don’t get a lot when you connect it to a Bravia TV.

Sony require the use of this item if users want some limited internet access i.e. I Player, U tube, Love Film etc. via a suitable Sony TV or Blu-ray player.
It is around £70 when other USB wireless dongles are about half that price or less. It works well but it is annoying that an ordinary wireless dongle won’t do. I have noticed that Toshiba are also doing the same trick with their equipment.

Dissapointed that Sony sells this useless accessory, 1 Aug 2010

We have a wireless network that works fine with four laptops, nintendo wii and various ipods BUT not with this expensive assessory. With laptops we are able to view the BBC Iplayer reliably. But with this it would only register 100% if we moved the router into the lounge. Even just outside the door the strength reduced to less than 50% which effected the iplayer buffering. I retuned it and got a full refund. Now I will have to hardwire an ethernet cable at some cost and inconvenience. Very, very dissapointed and expected better from Sony.
