Pride and Prejudice

Posted by Notcot on May 28, 2012 in Cult Film
Pride and Prejudice

Elizabeth Bennet the second eldest of five daughters whom Mrs Bennett is anxious to dispose of in marriage is the most intelligent and delightful of all Jane Austen’s heroines. ; ; Her vitality vivacity and wit her hasty dismissal of superior Mr Darcy – ‘the most disagreeable man in the world’ – how he improves his manners and she changes her mind are the central ingredients of Pride and Prejudice. It is Jane Austen’s best-loved novel and through the depth and sparkle of its comedy we are encouraged to consider what balance of energy and order playfulness and regulation constitutes real strength of character.

Each of these four Gothic stories reveals a psychological tale of isolation and monomania. H. Walpole’s ‘The Castle of Otranto’ is filled with terror and ghostly interventions. William Beckford’s ‘Vathek’ alternates grotesque comedy with scenes of exotic magnificence. ‘The Monk’, by Matthew Lewis and M. Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ are also included.

Repo Man (1984) [Masters of Cinema] (LTD Edition Steelbook) [Blu-ray]

Repo Man (1984) [Masters of Cinema] (LTD Edition Steelbook) [Blu-ray]

A volatile, toxic potion of satire and nihilism, road movie and science fiction, violence and comedy, the unclassifiable sensibility of Alex Cox’s Repo Man is the model and inspiration for a potent strain of post-punk American comedy that includes not only Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction), but also early Coen brothers (Raising Arizona, in particular), Men in Black, and even (in a weird way) The X-Files. Otto, a baby-face punk played by Emilio Estevez, becomes an apprentice to Bud (Harry Dean Stanton), a coke-snorting, veteran repo-man-of-honour prowling the streets of a Los Angeles wasteland populated by hoods, wackos, burnouts, conspiracy theorists, and aliens of every stripe. It may seem chaotic at first glance, but there’s a “latticework of coincidence” (as Tracey Walter puts it) underlying everything. Repo Man is a key American movie of the 1980s–just as Taxi Driver, Nashville, and Chinatown are key American movies of the ’70s. With a scorching soundtrack that features Iggy Pop, Fear, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, and Suicidal Tendencies. –Jim Emerson

A Flash of Noir: Flash Fiction & Very Short Stories with a Twist

A Flash of Noir: Flash Fiction & Very Short Stories with a Twist

A Flash of Noir is a collection of flash fiction and short, short stories, laid down old-school style by master mystery writer Christopher Pinto. Writing in the genre of gumshoe detectives and sultry dames, creepy horror and hep cat jive, Pinto has put together a series of mostly one-page, 60-second reads that will transport you to another time…a darker, more sinister time.

From smokey bars in New York City to the tropical islands of the Florida keys, A Flash of Noir takes you for a spin through the seediest gin joints and darkest alleys. One minute you’re speeding down I-95 in a hot rod, the next you’re tasting cheap whiskey in a basement tap room where the women are heartless and the men are unforgiving. Gangsters, cops, private eyes, strippers, murderers, phantoms…plus a few comedy pieces to keep you from wanting to slit your wrists.

Over 40 stories of crime fiction, ghost stories, retro fiction and short beatnik poetry plus noir-esque original photographs by the author make this a fast, fun read. There’s even a flash written entirely of song titles…see if you can list every one!

Pinto is author of the new, up-and-coming Detective Bill Riggins paranormal mystery series, of which Murder Behind the Closet Door and Murder on Tiki Island have already been met with rave reviews. Murder Under the Boards, The Atlantic City Murder Mystery is due out next…soon.
