The Best of Joe R. Lansdale

By turns absurd, hilarious, and terrifying, this outrageous collection features the best writings of the high priest of Texan weirdness. Horny steam-shovels, odd-ball detectives, malicious rocks, spectral prehistoric fish, and vampire hunters permeate these vividly detailed stories. Featuring cult-classic award-winning tales such as “The Night They Missed the Horror Show,” “Mad Dog Summer,” and “Dog,” along with non-fiction forays into drive-in theatres and low budget films, this dynamic retrospective represents the broad spectrum of Lansdale’s career. “Bubba Hotep” — the tale of Elvis, John F. Kennedy, and a soul-sucking mummy, which was made into an award-winning film — is included along with the acclaimed novella, “On the Far Side of the Cadillac Desert with Dead Folks,” and never before collected works. Original, compelling, and downright odd, this unforgettable compilation is essential reading for fans of horror, mystery, and southern gothic.

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls

Posted by Notcot on Apr 30, 2010 in Cult Film

Average Rating: 4.0 / 5 (4 Reviews)

Amazon.co.uk Review
You either love Russ Meyer’s garishly sexist movies about bodacious babes and horny men or you find them utterly disgusting. The response to his work is that clear-cut. Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, which features a screenplay by critic Roger Ebert, barely qualifies as a sequel to the film based on Jacqueline Susann’s trashy bestseller. Rather, it’s a broad, trashy remake on its own terms about what happens to a trio of female rock musicians when they leave the Midwest and head for Hollywood. Sex, drugs, murder–the only thing it doesn’t have is cannibalism, the gold standard when it comes to trashy entertainment. –Marshall FineEND
