Great Cinema Detectives: Best Movies of Mystery, Suspense & Film Noir (Hollywood Classics)

Posted by Notcot on Jun 19, 2011 in Noir

Sub-titled, “Best Movies of Mystery, Suspense and Film Noir”, this book examines 192 examples of the genre. Complete credits and release information are provided for each film. From “Abbott and Costello Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff” through to “Woman on the Run”, author John Howard Reid takes a look at one of Hollywood’s favorite genres, covering not only famous movies like “The Kennel Murder Case”, “The Maltese Falcon”, “The Thin Man”, “Notorious” and “Murder, My Sweet”, but the series films like “Charlie Chan at the Opera”, “The Falcon in Hollywood” and “Sherlock Holmes and the Scarlet Claw”. Many of these films are now widely distributed on DVD. Life is full of surprises. When JHR wrote this book, he had little hope that a masterpiece like “Daughter of Shanghai” would surface on DVD. But it is now available. So are all of the Thin Man movies; engrossing film noir entries like “The Dark Corner”, “Hangover Square”, “Beware, My Lovely”, “Johnny Apollo” and “The Second Woman”; famous foreign films like “The Wages of Fear”; and even extraordinary thrillers like “Confession” and “The Clouded Yellow”. Here is a book that will not only awaken wonderful memories, but provide an informative and reliable guide for further viewing.

beautiful, 6 Sep 2009
This review is from: The Designated Victim [1971] [DVD] (DVD)

Had this on the shelf for awhile now..just got round to watching it..sunday afternoon, closed curtains..Well all I can say it’s totally beautiful..the locations, inside and out are absolutly stunning, grand Italian interiors and the beautiful Venice..acting wise it’s second to none..sometimes(well,alot of the time)the acting in these giallo films let them down, but not in this one…great story, but don’t expect loads of killing/blood,it’s all about the plot/storyline..alittle nudity in the begining for no apparent reason, and then none from then on,it doesn’t need it,so well done to shameless for bringing this to my attention..now then, where’s my copy of Venus in furs…

This is a great piece of film-making.It’s stylish with a brilliant, ambiguous storyline and smart, well dressed actors. The suspense gets really cranked up and the ending will blow you away.Wonderful.

Another winner from Shameless, 4 Mar 2009
This review is from: The Designated Victim [1971] [DVD] (DVD)

Shameless yet again bring us long suffering UK folk another previously unavailable giallo gem. The film has been restored to it’s fullest version and looks fantastic ( aside from some scenes that have been rescued from a full frame vhs tape ) The disc has some nice extras including: a fact commentary track, deleted scenes, trailer, poster gallery and trailer for other Shameless gems ( plus a hidden easter egg ).

American Werewolf in London

Posted by Notcot on Apr 24, 2010 in Cult Film

Average Rating: 4.5 / 5 (53 Reviews)

Amazon.co.uk Review
With an ingenious script, engaging characters, nerve-shredding suspense, genuinely frightening set-pieces and laugh-out-loud funny bits An American Werewolf in London is a prime candidate for the finest horror-comedy ever made. Americans David (David Naughton) and Jack (Griffin Dunne) are backpacking in northern England when Jack is killed by a wild beast and David is bitten. Back in London David finds himself falling in love with a nurse, Alex (played with winning charm by Jenny Agutter), and turning into a werewolf. Adding to his problems, an increasingly decomposed Jack keeps coming back from the dead, and he is not a happy corpse. The Oscar winning make-up and transformation scenes still look good and rather than send itself up Werewolf plays its horror seriously, the laughs coming naturally from the surreal situation. Naughton is engagingly confused and disbelieving, desperately coping with the ever more nightmarish world, while Landis delivers one absolutely stunning dream sequence, an unbearably tense hunt on the London Underground and a breathtaking finale. Gory, erotic, shocking and romantic, this unforgettable horror classic has it all. Tom Holland’s Fright Night (1985) remixed the formula with vampires, as did Landis himself in Innocent Blood (1992). A disappointing sequel, An American Werewolf in Paris, followed in 1997. –Gary S Dalkin
