Detective Miles Jensen is called to the lawless town of Santa Mondega to investigate a spate of murders. This would all be quite ordinary in those rough streets, except that Jensen is the Chief Detective of Supernatural Investigations. The plot centres around a mysterious blue stone. This is a cinematic page-turner shot through with black humour.

Firstly, let me say why I read this book. I have become so disillusioned with recent best sellers, especially the po-faced pretentious dross that ends up on the Richard & Judy list of shame. I generally prefer books with lots of short chapters that end on a cliff-hanger and this is a great example. Now what you need to understand is, this book begs, borrows, steals, rents, flaunts and scavenges from literally dozens of other films and books – often very clumsily. And so on to the plot. Vampires, cowboys, monks, sluts, tough guys, gringos, dodgy bars, blood and gore. Any questions? A novel which contains large amounts of the above is not going to win prizes for subtlety or character development but for pure entertainment value it is pretty good. Trashy? Yes. Tacky? Definitely. Engrossing? You bet. I really enjoyed reading this book, it was like a breath of fresh air, or rather, cigarette smoke (as an ex-smoker, I still crave that…). I know why some reviewers would give this no stars but as a holiday read it works. The plot actually only touches on the idea of the book with no name, the central theme in the novel is just unfiltered violence. Give it a try.

An amazing read and I think this book has just become one of my favourites. An explosion of stirring twists and scenarios that literally left me biting my nails in anticipation and flicking the pages to get to the next chapter. After buying it without knowing much about the plot, I found it even more enjoyable and was happily surprised by the outcome of my buy. Organised chaos, absolutely loved every word.

For those of you who may be a little superstitious and have been disinclined to read this book due to the tag line “beware reader, …. this book will kill you”. Dont worry! there are no chants or satanic verses that will will invoke the evil spirits and cause your death!!

Now to the story. “drug induced lunacy” as one critic described it!… Oh how true that is. In a good way of course. Lots of blood, guts, killings, shootings, dirty mexican (I think) bars, bounty hunters, monks, a hit man named ELVIS!, vampires, werewolves, mystery and intrigue. what more could you ask for in a book?!

Its most definately an easy read. Nothing that you need to rack you brains over. Nice short snappy chapters and the writing isnt exactly clever! But it describes what it needs to and gets staright to the point!

Its like a quentin tarantino film, on paper, for the 2000 generation!

Theres always a cliff hanger at the end of each chapter which is most definately what keeps the reader engaged in the book.

It is very graphic in a lot of its descriptions. And there is liberal use of the F word through out.

Its trashy and tacky, Brass and crass. But most definately an enjoyable read. Its one of those that you’ll make time to read. Which is very rare for me

Overall: If your looking for an easy read with a non too serious story line, but a good plot, blood and guts, and cliff hangers at the end of each chapter. Then heres your man (book)!

Go on give it a try. You wont regret it !

(btw there is a lot of name dropping from many, many many popular films of recent times, which makes it even more funny!)

It’s fair to say that when my girlfriend gave me this as a present I wasn’t best impressed. The plot suggests that everyone who reads the book ends up dead, so I thought she was trying to get rid of me in a particularly cowardly fashion. In fact maybe she was, I guess I’ll never know. Fact of the matter is, I plucked up the guts to read it anyway, and it was good enough that I managed to persuade the girlfriend to read it too.

I’d be keen to know if the anonymous author is an established writer or a total nobody, but either way I’d happily buy another of his/her books. The story flows from the outset and the plot unravels at a rapid pace from about a third of the way in. There are some really original ideas in here, but this is definitely not to everyone’s taste. There’s a lot of bad language and some truly unpleasant characters. It’s often hard to tell who the good guys are, because all of the characters have flaws. I often found myself rooting for characters who were liars, thieves or even murderers simply because they were somehow likeable. There’s lots of references to films too, sometimes unneccessarily so, but often to humourous effect, although if you haven’t seen the film(s) in question this could prove irritating. However, almost every chapter ends in a cliffhanger of some sort that make this book damn near impossible to put down. I read it in two days and I’m looking forward to reading it again to see if I can spot more of the clues I missed first time round. There are some really cool characters in The Book With No Name and it’s them as much as the story that make this such an entertaining read. Not for the squeamish (or indeed those who fear they might be killed after reading it!!) but definitely one for anyone who likes a good murder mystery and a few laughs in amidst all the bloodshed. Of course you could just buy it for someone you don’t like and then if they don’t get killed you’ll know it’s safe to try it yourself!!

The best part of my recent washout of a holiday was reading this book. A couple of friends of mine had raved about it, so I gave it a try and now I can understand why they were both so passionate about it. I was disappointed when it ended, and I did contemplate reading it again, such was the poor weather.

It’s all about a precious stone that a load of evil folks are trying to get their filthy hands on. There is also the story of two cops on the trail of a killer called the Bourbon Kid. They think he is killing everyone who reads The Book With No Name.

All of the characters in this story are really well rounded. Each one seems to have something unique about them, whether it be a metal hand, a desire to be Elvis or simply a particularly dangerous drink problem.

This is an easy book to read and it’s a shame it isn’t longer because my holiday would have been a little more enjoyable if I hadn’t finished this so quickly.

Almost every chapter seemed to end in a cliffhanger that made me feel the need to read just one more each time, and as most of the chapters are only 4 or 5 pages I usually did.

Don’t expect anything too deep and meaningful or educational. This is violence, comedy and, well, a bit of everything else thrown in for good measure too!

Despite the early confusion caused by the many different genres this actually all tied up at the end in a very surprising and satisfying way.

All in all a very good holiday read, especially if the weather lets you down.

We agree with all of the above. Book with no name is a thrilling (but not deep) read which will keep you entertained. It is strangely addictive and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
