The Mortal Instruments 4: City of Fallen Angels

The Mortal War is over, and sixteen-year-old Clary Fray is back home in New York, excited about all the possibilities before her. She’s training to become a Shadowhunter and – most importantly of all – she can finally call Jace her boyfriend. But nothing comes without a price. Someone is murdering the Shadowhunters who used to be in Valentine’s Circle, provoking tensions between Downworlders and Shadowhunters that could lead to a second, bloody war. And when Jace begins to pull away from her without explaining why, Clary is forced to delve into the heart of a mystery whose solution reveals her worst nightmare: she herself has set in motion a terrible chain of events that could lead to her losing everything she loves. More enjoyable than the preceding books but overly melodramatic, 30 April 2011

It’s 6 weeks after CITY OF GLASS and Clary’s training to be a Shadowhunter, she and Jace are finally going out and her mother is getting married to Luke. But then Jace begins pulling away from her and actively avoiding her. Confused and hurt she turns to her best friend Simon, but he has problems of his own. Camille, the true leader of the New York vampires has returned and wants to use Simon’s mark of Cain to help her gain control back from Raphael, he’s double-dating Isabelle and Maia and random people are trying to kill him.

Soon Clary, Jace and Simon discover that Clary’s actions in CITY OF GLASS have set in motion a horrific chain of events that threaten everything and everyone she loves.

Cassandra Clare’s follow-up to the successful MORTAL INSTRUMENTS TRILOGY ties together unresolved plot strands from CITY OF GLASS with elements from THE CLOCKWORK ANGEL (the first her Victorian era prequel trilogy). It’s an ambitious book with a large cast and a lot to pack in, but the story (for the most part) cracks on at a fast pace and I liked the way Clare interwove elements from the other books (which you need to read to get the most out of this) but there were some clunky moments of exposition, which deadened the pace.

My problem with the series has always been Jace, who I found too arrogant to care about. Here he’s more vulnerable as he’s forced to confront his feelings for Clary and his fear of losing her, although the device used to convey this is hackneyed and I never believed in his refusal to explain to her what’s happening (or her refusal to press him on it, instead assuming the worst).

Simon plays a bigger role in this book and while I could have done without the love triangle (mainly because the conclusion is telegraphed), his story does have the most potential and I really liked the addition of Camille who is an unknown quantity working to her own agenda.

The last quarter feels a little rushed, with Clare packing too much in and some of the emotional scenes in the book veer towards soap opera and the cliffhanger will drive the fans mad. However, I enjoyed this more than I did the previous books as the story is more original and as such I’ll be reading on.

Clary is back in New York, training to be a Shadowhunter. Finally being able to call Jace her boyfriend is a great relief. However, Jace begins to distance himself from Clary. He has been suffering with nightmares, which terrify him, as he sees himself hurting Clary.
Meanwhile, Simon has issues of his own. The mark Clary placed on him during the battle in Idris is an ancient one that has hidden implications.
Can Jace overcome his nightmares? Will Simon’s mark become a burden and a curse?

This is the fourth book in The Mortal Instrument series. It is another fantastically well written story by Cassandra Clare that swept me away!
Clary is finally happy: Her mother has recovered from her coma and is planning to get married to Luke, and Clary is able to call Jace her boyfriend. However, Jace is putting some distance between Clary and himself due to his nightmares.
Simon is struggling to keep his secret from his mother and decides to move out.
The Lightwood’s are still mourning the death of Max.
There are some more characters brought into the story: Jordan, Camille and Lilith. These characters bring even more adventure and depth to the series. A character (who shall remain nameless) makes a surprise return. The ending finished on a cliffhanger that left me gasping! I have absolutely fallen in love with this series! It has gripped my imagination and left me wanting more! Luckily, my wish is to come true, as the fifth book, The City of Lost Souls, is due for release soon. I highly recommend this book, and series, to everyone who loves to read YA/YA Romance/Action/Adventure.

I wish city of lost souls was out!, 23 April 2012

I won’t put any spoilers in this review.

I cannot wait for the next book out!

I really liked this book, the book started pretty much where to other finished. The first few chapters slowed on the action a little bit and concentrated on the background story a bit more which was great!

After the first chapter the action is back at full pelt and i just couldn’t put it down!

I have never met a series that is such a page turner! If you have read the rest in series don’t stop until you have read this one!! You won’t be disappointed!
