I bought the TomTom car kit because I have one of the iPhones with a dodgy GPS chip. It now works perfectly. it is not just a mount, it boosts GPS, can link sound from app to car radio, has a built in speaker, and also you can pair using bluetooth. Most importantly though, my app now works perfectly, and I can use my iPod in it with the app if I want. You get what you pay for, and this is quality!!

This is fantastic and it works with other apps such as Navigon. 10 out of 10!

Thanks to a number of misfortunes I needed a new mobile, MP3 player and a Satnav.

Answer: iPhone. Easy.

Purchased the TomTom app for it and yes it is good (safety cameras etc come included) but a bit of lag and in built up areas with high buildings could get a bit messy.

So traded up to the bespoke cradle and HUGE improvement: works superbly. Also can now connect via Belkin radio link to my car stereo, which previously was a no go for the iPhone.

Do not dispute it is an expensive fix but you get what you pay for.

As I have an iPhone and don’t want multiple gadgets, I thought the combination of the car kit plus the Tom Tom app would be a good solution. As a cradle, it is fine – does everything it needs to, keeps the iPhone charged and also keeps it from going into sleep mode. Its also handy if you want to run the Google map app just to see where you’re going. The built in speaker also works well. However I was less than impressed with the supposed inbuilt GPS, which didn’t seem any better than my 3G’s GPS. It lost signal for about 15 minutes on one two hour trip, and sometimes it takes a long time locking onto a signal – a minute or two. So at £100 for basically a loudspeaker and cradle, this is waaay too expensive.

As for the TomTom app itself, you really need a 3GS to use it – its pathetically slow on a 3G.

Having tried a variety of solutions, including the FM radio type holders which transmit through the radio, the Tom Tom holder is my preference. The ones that play through the radio did not work with my Toyota Verso very well because the aerial on the car is at the back and the signal pumped out by the device gave a poor performance on transferring the music from the iPhone. The sat nav instructions faired better but the microphone left callers with poor clarity. Enter the Tom Tom, I prefer being able to use my car radio independently as the other system made this impossible so it was on to a winner from the start. If you want to play your iPhone music there is a wired connection built into the holder, you do have to buy a lead and your car audio has to have an appropriate jack. The performance is good all round and callers say that they can hear me very clearly. I recommend this product to all who need to use their phones in the car and the navigation system is the best out there. Good Product.
