This has to be the best value for money HDD available at the moment. high speed USB, US army standard shock proof and rubber protective coating all round. In my view it ticks all the boxes for reliable external storage. Top marks!

I purchased because the manufacture makes a big play on how strong the case is, i.e. drop tested to US military grade standards. In fact, although very well made, the case is plastic and flexes in the middle and is not as strong as my other external HD case made from alloy, which you could stand on! The Storejet software has useful features such as back up for email and data but has confusing 2nd level menus. You can also drag and drop if you don’t want to use Storejet. The USB Y adapter leads plug securely into USB ports and run the 500gb HD silently without the need for a separate power supply. In practise if you have a modern PC/Laptop, you only need to use the main USB lead as the second is for power only. I like the neat design and its light compact portability and can highly recommend it, but its a little expensive given the plastic construction.

I recently bought this storage device mainly to back up data but also as I needed additional storage space. Thought I’d test it out to help fellow buyers when they are looking for something similar. I have added here an everyday consumer’s perspective, so nothing too technical.

In the box – Storejet 250GB, Y-shaped USB cable and manuals. It gets powered via USB. There is an additional USB plug at the PC end, to provide additional power to the Storejet. I haven’t had to use the second one, apparently its needed in some older computers.

Size and shape – feels just slightly bigger than a PDA, can be easily carried in a pocket and very light weight. Good looking, as evident from the pictures. Loads better than the bulky hard drive I have with with miles of wires.

Build quality – Feels and looks quite sturdy. It claims to be shock proof and been tested to US military standards. However, you are still advised not to drop it. The covering is soft to touch.

Capacity – Its sold as 250GB, but the actual capacity is 232GB. I understand it is due to a technicality (1GB is actually 1024MB and not 1000MB, so most storage devices have less storage space than is claimed)

Data transfer – I transfered 1GB data to and from the Storejet. It took about 1 min and 45 secs from the PC to Storejet and about 2 mins and 40 seconds from the Storejet to the PC. Its fast enough for me.

Sync/software – The bundled software STelite3 takes seconds to install and is overall quite user friendly. Also, there is a one touch backup button on the Storejet, making backing up data a simple task.

I am overall quite pleased with my Storejet. The only thing I can’t say much about is the durability. Only time will tell and then maybe I’ll add an update to this review.

Over the years I’ve been through numerous external hard drives from a variety of manufacturers (Maxtor, Western Digital, Toshiba, Seagate). Over time, most of them have developed faults. This is to be expected from external hard drives, as the slightest fall or knock can damage the disk. It is always advisable, therefore, to have your important data backed up on a spare drive. However, the current generation of portable hard drives are more robust and generally powered from USB.

Having switched my music from my external (Fat 32) 500gb Toshiba, to my (OSX formatted) Transcend, I am incredibly pleased by the increase in speed when playing music on iTunes. I’m not sure if this is thanks to the transcend hardware, or simply being in a more mac compatible format, but nevertheless the improvements to iTunes has been fantastic. Whereas my Toshiba hard drive is made of plastic and feels quite flimsy, the transcend feels far more rugged.

So far no complaints.

This product was exactly as advertised. Very robust. I’ve carried it everywhere. And, if you’re into that sort of thing, the black rubber casing is very tactile! I have just used this for storage so far, but am planning to utilise the synchronise features soon. It appears that once i set it up, it will sychronise all Outlook, Internet explorer and other files everytime you plug into a different PC and press the button on it. Very useful when you have more than one PC. Another good feature is the Y-split USB lead (which comes with it). It will work fine with just one USB plugged in, but if you want faster file transfers plug in both USB’s on the Y-split. Very portable as it is so compact and there’s no power supply to lug around either. I stretched an iPod sock on to mine, and then i can fit the USB lead inside the sock as well, so all in one handy bundle.

I would definitely buy this product again, and if they start doing a 1TB version I’ll be getting it.
