Noir
In his introduction to the The Best American Noir of the Century, James Ellroy writes, “noir is the most scrutinised offshoot of the hard-boiled school of fiction. It’s the long drop off the short pier and the wrong man and the wrong woman in perfect misalliance. It’s the nightmare of flawed souls with big dreams and the precise how and why of the all-time sure thing that goes bad.†Offering the best examples of literary sure things gone bad, this collection ensures that nowhere else can readers find a darker, more thorough distillation of American noir fiction. James Ellroy and Otto Penzler, series editor of the annual The Best American Mystery Stories, mined one hundred years of writing — 1910-2010 — to find this treasure trove of thirty-nine stories. From noir’s twenties-era infancy come gems like James M. Cain’s “Pastorale,†and its post-war heyday boasts giants like Mickey Spillane and Evan Hunter. Packing an undeniable punch, diverse contemporary incarnations include Elmore Leonard, Dennis Lehane, Patricia Highsmith and William Gay, with many page-turners appearing in the last decade. In his introduction to the The Best American Noir of the Century, James Ellroy writes, “noir is the most scrutinised offshoot of the hard-boiled school of fiction. We all know how relaxing it is to sit back and listen to the gentle sounds of animals. Unfortunately to do this at home or at work usually requires lots of looking after, cleaning out, and feeding. Thankfully this is not the case with the Insect Cage Gallery. Simply pop the container on your desk, flick the switch and settle back to enjoy the sounds of nature as the gallery lights up, and the animal within sings away.
Price : £ 4.95

Unicycling as similar to riding a bicycle as surfing is to carpet bowls. If your sense of balance is more finely tuned than your sense of self-preservation then this is for you. Don’t buy this if you’re scared of a challenge though it’s great fun having a go. The really tricky bit is keeping the six watermelons in the air without your wheel slipping off the tightrope. Unicycling is not easy but then neither is origami and whilst paper folding is very creative and all it doesn’t get the adrenalin pumping or indeed your legs. Half as useful as a bicycle and twice as entertaining it’s a full sized cycle and comes boxed requiring some very elementary assembly. It has a 20inch wheel with aluminium rim a fully adjustable (and very comfy) seat and anti-slip pedals – though they’ll be the least of your problems. The handlebars are of course missing but we gather that’s the point of the whole thing.
Price : £ 89.99
