This flash is a great bit of kit. Its slave unit works brilliantly and it has a great built in diffuser and reflector and a nice screw on stand which has a tripod socket on its base. So as a stand alone slave flash it is excellent and has two slave modes.

It takes NiMh rechargeable AA batteries which is very useful.

It does work on a Canon camera, I have 450D, but not in TTL mode. So really it would just be useful in manual mode firing by experimentation on your Canon camera. I’m not sure why they say it is Canon compatible, unless they mean that a Canon can set it off. Which is something as Canon cameras can be fussy about which flash units they fire due to the voltage.

So if you want a slave flash or a manual then buy it, but if you want a Canon TTL flash, forget it.

This flash is not really designed to be used on camera. It has manual control and can also work as an optical slave but does not support any of the TTL protocols on modern cameras, but then it isn’t designed for that. The S2 optical slave mode does work with Canon E-TTL flashes though, ignoring the control flashes and triggering on the main flash.

If you want to get the best from it, buy two and get a set of PT-04 wireless flash triggers. Then take a look at the strobist blog on tips how to use them.

I have two of these and they work fine. Construction is not up there with a Canon 580 EX or similar, but it is very good for a fraction of the price. They generally feel quite robust and work as expected.

On the down side:-

The battery compartment cover is a bit fiddly as the retaining strap doesn’t quite fold out of the way when replacing batteries. Hardly a major issue though.

The second problem is the on/off switch works on a press action, which is means it occasionally switches on in the camera bag. Try and avoid stacking stuff on top.

I have heard of problems with the wide angle diffuser being a bit flimsy, but mine seem fine.

Just needed a supplementary flash that could go on the hot shoe of my Canon EOS 1000D or operate as a slave, and it does both beautifully.

The flash isn’t as powerful as some others, but at this price, I can buy multiple units to compensate, and I won’t want to cry if it gets damaged.

Only thing that could make this better is an external power connector so I can use external power supply instead of batteries.

For me, this was definitely worth the money!

i’ve not got much experienced with Flashgun as i don’t like doing flash photography and i just received this product and did a few tests! Looks like a very good bargain, made in China so don’t know how long it will last but good build, rotates 360 degrees, comes with inbuilt small reflector and a small diffuser that can cover the flash which was a pleasant surprise, easy of use, fits well on my Canon 5D. So far so good, looks like it does the job, not 5 stars because i’ve not used it long enough :))))

I was a bit concerned at first that the cost would reflect the quality. But I was wrong. This is a brilliant flash gun that actually works on my Canon. Showed it to a photography friend and now he is going to get one. Well done!!!!
