15 Storeys High – Series 1 (6 episodes) [DVD] [2002]

Posted by Notcot on Feb 10, 2011 in Cult Film

Focused on the madcap lives of flatmates Vince (Sean Lock) and Errol (Benedict Wong), the first series of the critically acclaimed BBC comedy Fifteen Stories High craftily points out the eccentricities of the modern world. Vince is an oddball with the habits of a man who has spent too much time in his own company. A lifeguard at the local swimming pool, he takes great pride in being able to tell swimmers off for no reason, and obtains his home decorating ideas from photos in Readers’ Wives. His lodger, Errol is the opposite of Vince, naively stupid and always taken advantage of by others. But he has his own unusual habits, too, such as tearing at wallpaper whenever he sees an unstuck corner. Vince has the weirdest encounters, though: such as being locked in the stocks for six hours when wrongly accused of killing a swan; or taken hostage by a neighbour when he spies a moon-boot wearing Shetland pony in the man’s spare bedroom.

Equally as funny are the short stories of the other residents living in the tower block that are interspersed between the antics of Vince and Errol. Enclosed within the four walls of different flats on the estate, these claustrophobic locations provide the ideal settings for the extreme behaviours depicted. There’s the hygiene obsessive who forces a visiting double-glazing salesman to take a bath and wear a protective suit before being able to look round his flat; the old man who spends all night in front of a mirror in a pair of underpants pretending he’s James Bond; and a New Age enthusiast who’s always getting disturbed when recording relaxation tapes. The general weirdness of the series takes some getting used to, but once you decipher the crazy world of Vince and Errol this is five-star comedy with a dark tinge. –John Galilee

Great product, 26 April 2008
By

This review is from: devolo dLAN 200 AVeasy (HomePlug AV) Starter Kit – Eth/ Eth (Electronics)

These were out of the box and working within a couple of minutes. One plug was patched into a broadband switch/router courtesy of the auto-uplink feature, and the other was connected straight into a PC’s Ethernet port. This connected fine at 100Mbit/s, which was the speed of the PC’s network card. Because it’s using the standard network port, no extra drivers are required on the PC, and worked just as well with a Linux based Eee PC as a Windows based box.

There are some restrictions on how you can connect these Homeplugs. According to the accompanying leaflet, they must be connected directly to a wall socket, not through a power-extension strip. They must also be on the same mains ring, which shouldn’t be a problem for most homes but might be an issue in the workplace.

These dLAN 200 plugs are not cheap at around £60 per connection, but are a bargain compared to the cost of getting network cabling & sockets properly installed, and much tidier than running ethernet cables on the floor. If you’re not planning to stream HD media, consider the cheaper 85Mbit/s Devolo Homeplug , which isn’t going to be much slower for most purposes, or Wireless LAN (54Mbit/s). Both of these would be fine for typical web-surfing, gaming or occasional file transfers. But if you want to stream HD media around your home and don’t want the expense and effort of laying Ethernet cables everywhere, then these are what you need.

Very easy to install, 21 Jun 2008
By

This review is from: devolo dLAN 200 AVeasy (HomePlug AV) Starter Kit – Eth/ Eth (Electronics)

The dLAN 200 was very easy to install. I connected one to my router and the other one to my PC upstairs. The documentation says that they should be plugged directly into the mains socket however I plugged one into a 6 way extension and it works fine. Both of these were not on the same ring main (although they are connected at the distribution board) but this did not cause any problem.

Each plug has it’s own ID no. and MAC address. The software on the supplied CD was easy to use – it automatically detected the one that my PC was plugged into. I just had to enter the ID no. of the one my router was plugged into and everything was connected.

I searched around on the internet and on ebay and found Amazon to be the cheapest and with free delivery ! I would recommend these for anyone who is experiencing poor wireless coverage or who wants to stream video around their home.

This review is from: devolo dLAN 200 AVeasy (HomePlug AV) Starter Kit – Eth/ Eth (Electronics)

I went for the Devolo AV Easy devices because of all the positive ‘up and running in a few minutes’ style reviews. My PC can recognisxe when the device is plugged in directly to it but I can’t do anything with it – the DLan configuration Wizard claims ‘no DLan adapter is found’. Tried plugging into my modem/router (Netgear DG824M) and the Netgear management software does not even see the device.

Later edit: I tried contact Devolo support via email. Expect a 2 day response to any email – including any followups. Had explained that I thought it was a hardware fault but responses I got were along the lines of ‘upgrade the firmware’ which is very poor since I explained in the email that the computer could not see one of the devices – making a firmware upgrade impossible. After a week of unsuccessful emailing I phoned their support line and immediately had it confirmed that I had a hardware problem.

Explained to Amazon who sent a new pair out immediately and these worked fine. My rating now would be – the hardware 4 stars, Devolo email support 1 star and the Devolo phone support 5 stars.

2 x RJ45 Network Splitter (TWIN PACK) – 1 x RJ45 (Male) to 2 x RJ45 (Female) Connections – ISDN – Interent – Ethernet – LAN – Twin pack because you need two of these to share an ethernet port

Average Rating: 5.0 / 5 (2 Reviews)

If you do not have enough spare ethernet ports on your wall sockets network, these adapters are for you. This splitter adapter will allow you to use two ethernet devices in one spare RJ45 wall socket female port, by splitting this port into 2. Attach either two computers, to an existing CAT5E Structured cabling system. Use a CAT5E UTP Cable Economiser to allow two ports to be on a to a single 8-core (4-pair) CAT5E UTP faceplate. Then use one at the other end to split the signal to two workstations. How they work: Two CAT5E cable economiser are required, one connected to a Patch Panel and another one The Cat5e Economiser, used in pairs (one at at each end of a cable run), allows 4 pair cable to be divided in two separate twisted pair data signal sockets.

  • Brand New RJ45 Network Splitter
  • RJ45 (Male) to 2 x RJ45 (Female) Connections
  • Share your network port between two devices
  • REMEMBER: You need to use this in pairs hence the twin pack offer
  • ALSO REMEMBER: Carefully read up on how to set these up successfully
