Big Bang Rocket

The Big Bang Rocket only needs a tiny square of newspaper to make an almighty ‘bang’! And how does it do that? Science of course! Wait come back… it’s fun science! Darker Than the Deepest Sea

Posted by Notcot on Jul 25, 2012 in Cult Film
Darker Than the Deepest Sea

When singer-songwriter Nick Drake died of a drug overdose in the autumn of 1974, he left behind only three well-received but modest selling albums. Today, he is recognised as one of true geniuses of English folk music, with millions of fans worldwide and a regular place in all-time best album lists. Using many newly discovered documents and all-new interviews with the singer’s friends and associates, Trevor Dann’s book reveals more detail on Nick Drake’s life than ever previously published, from his early years in Tanworth-in-Arden and Cambridge, to the missed opportunities and mismanagement that defined his recording career, to the remarkable ‘Drake cult’ that has grown since the singer’s death at age 26. An unflinching portrait of a reclusive and gifted artist, Darker Than the Deepest Sea is essential reading for any serious music fan.

Jason Statham: Taking Stock

Jason Statham: Taking Stock

After an exhilirating ten years, Jason Statham has finally confirmed his place in the Hollywood elite. And starring alongside his childhood heroes Stallone, Schwarznegger, Willis and Jet Li, it is hard to imagine him anywhere else. Born in south London, Jason Statham has always been an action-man. As a boy, Jason chose not to follow in the footsteps of his parents and instead cultivated his thirst for adrenaline in athletics and diving – a skill that took him to the World Championships in 1992. But it was on the athlectics track that he was first discovered by a modelling scout for Tommy Hilfiger and French Connection, which eventually led Jason to the then fledgling director Guy Ritchie. A string of Hollywood blockbusters – Lock Stock, Revolver, Snatch – followed. But perhaps his best known role came in 2002 when Jason was cast as Frank Martin in The Transporter. Statham’s background in martial arts defies the norm of the action-hero as he performs his own scenes and stunts in some of Hollywood’s most death-defying action scenes. A huge box office hit, The Transporter spawned two sequels and has earned the reputation of a cult classic.Len Brown’s biography is an insightful, comprehensive and gripping account of Britain’s all-action hero.

Tailgater Party Speaker

Posted by Notcot on Jul 23, 2012 in Gadgets
Tailgater Party Speaker

You never can tell when the sun’s going to decide to pop its face out from behind the clouds so make sure you’re always prepared with the Tailgater. It’s the portable speaker and amp with a dock designed for your iPod and despite its size (it’s 40% smaller than the iPod Party Speaker) it packs a mighty 22W punch. The in-built battery is good for eight hours once fully charged so you can forget about lugging that 2km extension cable all the way to the park (frankly we’re staggered you managed to find one that long in the first place) and enjoy some pumping tunage well into the evening. The Tailgater isn’t just for iPods – anything with a headphone socket can be hooked up to the speaker so if you’re not an iPod fan you won’t feel left out. What’s even more impressive is that you can use the unit as an amp for your guitar keyboard or microphone – so if you fancy a bit of a busk (and who doesn’t from time to time?) you can serenade your friends with your take on Led Zep. You may want to consider investing in some guitar lessons beforehand though or you might have to fish the Tailgater out of the nearest pond. The casing is remarkably heavy duty so the speaker can take some mild abuse without falling to pieces and there’s even a convenient carry handle making it even easier for you to lug it around from party to party. It’s the ultimate summer sound system for the party animal.

And Another Thing

Posted by Notcot on Jul 9, 2012 in Cult Film
And Another Thing

Everyone knows that Jeremy Clarkson finds the world a perplexing place – after all he wrote a bestselling book about it. Yet despite the appearance of “The World According To Clarkson” things don’t seem to have improved much. However Jeremy is not someone to give up easily and he’s decided to have another go. In “And Another Thing” our exasperated hero discovers that: he inadvertently dropped a bomb on North Carolina; we’re all going to explode at the age of 62; Russians look bad in Speedos – but not as bad as we do; no one should have to worry about being Bill Oddie’s long lost sister; and he should probably be nicer about David Beckham. Thigh-slappingly funny and – as ever – in your face Jeremy Clarkson bursts the pointless little bubbles of the idiots while celebrating the special the unique and the sheer bloody brilliant…

Nightmare Movies: Horror on Screen Since the 1960s

Nightmare Movies: Horror on Screen Since the 1960s

Now over twenty years old, the original edition of Nightmare Movies has retained its place as a true classic of cult film criticism. In this new edition, Kim Newman brings his seminal work completely up to date, both reassessing his earlier evaluations and adding a second part that analyses the last two decades of horror films with all the wit, intelligence and insight for which he is known. Since the publication of the first edition, horror has been on a gradual upswing and has gained a new and stronger hold over the film industry. Newman negotiates his way through a vast back catalogue of horror and charts the on-screen progress of our collective fears and bogeymen, from the low-budget slasher movies of the 1960s, through to the slick releases of the 2000s. Nightmare Movies is an invaluable companion that not only provides a newly updated history of the darker side of film but also acts as a truly entertaining guide with which to explore the less well-trodden paths of horror and rediscover the classics with a newly instructed eye.

If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor

Posted by Notcot on Jul 5, 2012 in Cult Film
If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor

Most Hollywood biographies are little more than 500-page musings on the ‘when-I-met…’ theme, filled with famous names, love affairs and cliches of a ‘meteoric rise’ or ‘tragic fall’. Bruce Campbell’s If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor is the boisterous antidote to such convention. Campbell is the ultimate ‘B’ Movie actor. Star of the cult Evil Dead trilogy, with a CV that ranges from buddy Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, through The X-Files and Xena: Warrior Princess, to the less-than-glamorous Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters, you’ve probably never heard of him. But his is one heck of a story! The popularity of Bruce, the cult hero of cable TV and Hollywood’s second rung, is burning brighter than ever, his legion of fans undiminished after over thirty years. Insightful, encouraging and brilliantly funny, If Chins Could Kill! is a brilliant place to start for those unfamiliar with his work. For everyone else, it acts as a wonderful reminder for just why they fell in love with him in the first place.
